  2. Fleet Foxes - The Shrine / An Argument

Visually, the symbolism in this short piece is ridiculous. All I want thinking about was survival, and the emotions that we carry with us on our quest to survival.

Musically, I have never heard of the fleet foxes before and I feel stupid for not knowing about them. The part when the lead singer sings the lyric “sunlight over me no matter what i do” stirred so much power within me. It truly captured a brotha by surprise.

I don’t know if this is an official video but whatever it is — deserves my props.

This documentary short is an introduction to the issue of shadeism, the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. This documentary short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl - all females of colour - the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

jemletoile: so proud of anyoen who speaks out about issues like this. SO PROUD OF MY GIRL NATASHAAAA!! GIRL I SEE YOU…MISS YOU AND LOVE YOU!

I love all these girls. Shout outs to Nayani, Nadia, Amanda, Jade and Muginga. Hmmm… should I be snitching on their names like that? *watches film the 17th time*… Oh ok, they say their names during the film.

  7. This short film captured me. It didn’t even have to use words to express the story, just visual art.

Martine Chartrand’s animated short dives into the heart of Black culture with an exhilarating trip though history. Watch as a young boy traces his roots through the animated stories his grandmother shares with him about the events that shaped their cultural heritage.

    Peace.
